“Saturday Night Live,” NBC’s sometimes amusing sketch comedy present, was a gold mine for comedy this previous weekend: Alaska’s two Dan Sullivans warping the midterm elections. President Donald Trump’s latest fixation on male backsides. Drunk Uncle’s return. Even a kinder and gentler but still creepy Pennywise the clown.
Yet one performer on the long-running present couldn’t resist reaching for a comedic libel that set jaws on the ground on Halloween.
Michael Che, co-anchor of the “Weekend Update” fake information phase, quipped: “This week, a record number of people voted in Israel’s election, which is great to see regardless of if you’re on the right side, or the left side, or the genocide.”
The viewers gasped. “Update” co-anchor Colin Jost regarded around, mouth open, facial features aghast in mock horror — but said nothing before altering the topic.
Che’s “joke” is, of course a false narrative ginned up by terrorists bent on slaughtering Jews. And it’s accountable for an uptick in worldwide antisemitism.
It was not the first time Che used the Jewish state as an unfunny punchline.
On Feb. 20, 2021’s installment of “Weekend Update,” Che reported on Israel’s landmark achievement of vaccinating half of its residents against COVID-19.
“I’m going to guess it’s the Jewish half,” Che “joked,” reinforcing the flat-out lie that Israel’s authorities was only inoculating its Jewish residents. In truth, Israeli residents of all races and religions are handled equally, and that consists of the nation’s Muslim Arabs.
It’s laborious enough to struggle the lies against Israel and Jews in the information media. Hollywood’s obsession with the lie that Israel is the aggressor and not the sufferer of terror is a blood libel that sadly reaches far more individuals.
It’s become trendy for artists like Macklemore, Mark Ruffalo, Javier Bardem, Susan Sarandon and Emma Stone to rail against Israel.
Even Adam Brody, who stars as a rabbi — a Jew in actual life and onscreen — in the Netflix TV collection “Nobody Wants This,” pushes this falsehood.
“Put me down as thinking it’s a genocide,” Brody yammered in a September interview printed in GQ journal. “Put me down as wanting a free Palestine. It’s awful that it’s taken so much death and misery, but it does feel like it’s reaching a breaking point that it should have a while ago.”
It is terrible that there is so much dying and distress. When will Hamas and other radical teams cease making an attempt to wipe out the Jewish individuals?
But never thoughts. To the Hollywood numbskulls and their disciples, Jews are the enemy. The only villains. And to sick comics like Michael Che, the butts of twisted jokes.
