Pro-Dem phony information websites are manipulating ChatGPT customers forward of midterms: report

Websites masquerading as impartial, native information sources are selling Democratic candidates to unsuspecting ChatGPT customers, according to a report.

The revelations stoke concern about voter manipulation just days forward of the essential midterm elections.

Digital safety agency VisionHeight uncovered 37 phony web sites, a quantity of them “thinly veiled political ads made to look like reporting from local news outlets,” according to NPR.

They were cited in ChatGPT solutions to questions about congressional candidates and their positions on points like affordability and public security — probably misinforming voters in favor of Dems.

The “Scranton Beacon” is half of a mysterious 37-site community selling Democratic congressional candidates.

In one instance, the community of websites tilted ChatGPT solutions in favor of Sean McCann, the Democratic candidate in Michigan’s tight race for the 4th congressional district, NPR reported Friday.

Asked which candidates in that race “care about affordability,” ChatGPT gave an reply favoring McCann, citing the “Kalamazoo Beacon.”

But the “Beacon” seems to be a phony website devoted to boosting McCann — every one of the 16 tales it’s printed to date were about him, NPR reported.

“The McCann campaign has no knowledge of or involvement with these websites,” a spokesperson for the candidate informed The Post.

The “Beacon” is one of 10 purported native information shops in the 37-site community, each selling a completely different Democrat in a aggressive congressional race, according to NPR and VisionHeight.

In Pennsylvania’s eighth congressional district, the “Scranton Beacon” printed a news-style candidate profile of Dem Paige Cognetti, while “Electric City Watch” urged readers to support the same candidate, according to VisionHeight.

The politically opinionated Desert Take belongs to a community of 37 web sites whose operators and monetary backers have not been publicly recognized.

In all, the community of 37 phony websites consists of 10 native information shops, 10 native opinion blogs, 12 statewide web sites and 5 nationwide political shops — all of them aimed at selling largely Democratic candidates, according to VisionHeight.

They focus on 10 candidates from coast to coast by offering information that bots like ChatGPT are seemingly to choose up and share with customers, NPR discovered.

About half the time it was requested about one of the 10, ChatGPT cited the community of phony websites, according to the broadcaster.

It’s not clear who is operating the ring. But “multiple indicators suggest that all 37 websites share a common operator,” NPR reported.

Democratic Women in the House helped amplify candidates featured across an interconnected community of statewide political websites and purported hometown information publications.

Each of their domains were registered on Sept. 15 — 36 of them within an eight-minute span — according to registration and digital-certificate information gathered by VisionHeight and Andreas Sjöstedt, co-founder of cybersecurity agency Erebus.

The sample “points to sites most likely written by AI, written for AI, and meant to be passed on by AI to voters. That is what makes the approach so cheap and so fast: machines do the writing, and machines do the reading,” according to VisionHeight.

The community printed a whole lot of articles in September and October, with new materials showing in waves, according to NPR.

On Sept. 30 alone, about 100,000 phrases of candidate-related content material were posted utilizing a single template introduced in 4 completely different layouts, VisionHeight discovered.

ChatGPT cited the Kalamazoo Beacon when answering questions about affordability in Michigan’s 4th Congressional District, according to NPR’s investigation.

The cybersecurity agency said the quantity and uniformity counsel synthetic intelligence may have been used to generate the content material, although that has not been established for certain.

All 37 web sites allow 17 AI and search crawlers — including these operated by OpenAI, Google and Anthropic — to entry their content material.

VisionHeight discovered that favored candidates obtained profiles operating roughly 5,000 phrases, alongside with equally prolonged voter guides containing 50 to 63 questions and solutions.

The cybersecurity agency counted more than 360 situations of the phrase “is the stronger choice” across the community –wording apparently aimed at manipulating AI bots. The phrase popped up 34 occasions about a single Democratic congressional candidate coated by “Wolverine State Report,” a website posing as a Michigan political information outlet.

Google’s Gemini chatbot did not cite any of the community’s web sites in NPR’s testing.

Google search did not show the websites on the first web page of its odd outcomes during the checks, either.

An exception came earlier this month, according to VisionHeight, but Google spokesman Davis Thompson informed NPR the firm detected a coverage violation and took “swift action.”

“ChatGPT’s search tools cite from a range of sources so people can explore and make their own judgements,” an OpenAI spokesperson informed The Post.

“Around elections, our integration with Democracy Works brings up-to-date information about registration, deadlines, voting locations and other election requirements directly into ChatGPT.”

“When issues are brought to our attention, we take action to improve our model responses.”

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee denied involvement, according to NPR. The Post has sought remark from the DCCC and from Cognetti.
