Takeaways from Sunday’s 38-33 Jets loss to the Raiders:
1. Geno Smith is a confounding quarterback. He performed one of his greatest video games of the season Sunday, going 20-for-32 passing for 290 yards and two touchdowns, but he did not play nicely enough to win … again. He threw a game-sealing interception when the Jets had a probability to steal a win at the finish. He struggled in the purple zone and the Jets offense went 2-for-6 in that space, which proved to be the distinction in the sport.
Smith has performed nicely, but you can see why the 36-year-old is now a journeyman starter. He is not fairly good enough to elevate the offense around him. I know some followers are clamoring to see rookie Cade Klubnik get his shot, but we are not shut to that. If we get into December and the Jets season is over, that is the time to play Klubnik.
The Raiders are paying Smith $16.2 million this season, so Sunday was an attention-grabbing state of affairs where Las Vegas paid Smith to play against them. By the finish of the sport, you could see why.
