Bargain chain faces FTC lawsuit for ‘misleading’ practices

Published on

The Federal Trade Commission has sued the discount chain Dollar General for what it characterised as “long-running deceptive pricing practices” by charging clients more once they attain the register than the costs that are displayed on cabinets and in ads.

Twenty states joined in the criticism, filed by the US District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee. It said that Dollar General failed to appropriate the concern despite what it said was “extensive corporate knowledge of the problem.”

“Dollar General has betrayed the trust of millions of American consumers and imposed significant financial harm on communities and consumers who are already struggling to make their paychecks last,” wrote Christopher Mufarrige, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection.

Dollar General, based mostly in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, just outside of Nashville, did not instantly return a request for remark from The Associated Press.

The states becoming a member of the FTC lawsuit embody: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah and Wisconsin, according to the FTC.

Americans have become annoyed with increased costs, and also what they understand to be new strategies used by restaurant chains and main retailers in setting costs including the use of synthetic intelligence instruments.
