Even before Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent units out new US strikes to stress Iran’s economic system, issues are wanting growing grim for Tehran; President Donald Trump is clearly profitable and primarily wants to maintain agency as the enemy tries to wriggle out.
Crucially, oil is now flowing through the Strait of Hormuz, that means Tehran’s gambit of closing it has failed.
And the neighbors that Iran has been attacking have had enough: Its largest buying and selling accomplice, the United Arab Emirates, last week lower off all transactions including monetary ones.
Dubai for many years has been key to Tehran’s evasion of sanctions as effectively as over a third of its imports.
Iranian inflation was already working over 90% amid mass unemployment and other crises, leaving the regime more and more unable to pay its common military.
Now even the Revolutionary Guard should quickly really feel the pinch — endangering the regime’s final linchpin.

Friday’s information was big: US escorts now have oil flowing steadily through the Strait, with 200 ships a week (and rising) now transiting safely, up practically 400% from just two weeks earlier.
That’s still under pre-war ranges, but good enough (alongside with other shifts in manufacturing and export routes around the world) to hold oil costs manageable — albeit up painfully from January’s stage.
Iran’s leaders are now doing another spherical of bad-cop/good-cop, with one set frothing at the mouth with threats while others insist they need peace and provide to renew negotiations — an “offer” that, if Washington bites, will shortly flip into calls for for preemptive US concessions before they’ll even faux to discuss meaningfully.
The recreation is meant to support the narrative that Trump’s home critics hold pushing: the thought that Iran’s management was keen to negotiate a lasting peace, but then the US-Israel strikes killed these supposed moderates, permitting the “hard-liners to seize control” — and our only method to defeat these dangerous guys is to strike a deal with the remaining “moderates” so they can elbow apart the worst folks.
The regime has been taking part in variations of this schtick for many years now, and Western liberals (particularly in the media) hold falling for it, though the “good cops” never ship any actual change.
As Mark Dubowitz warned in The Post last week, Tehran may very effectively try one more gambit in this technique: Using its husbanded missiles and drones (and perhaps its cyberwar capabilities) in the largest blitz it can pull off in late October, proper before the Israeli and US elections.
The thought is to create an air of disaster that panics voters in both nations, and so dislodges Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu while handing Democrats stable management of Congress — and with it the skill to defund the Pentagon while miring Trump in yet another impeachment farce.
Trump and his staff want to warn the American folks of this risk: Explaining that Iran is cornered, but still has a few tooth left and will do its greatest to break our will.
At this level, the two sides are in the remaining levels of staring each other down: Now is not the time for Washington to blink.
